Bids are being accepted to paint and rehabilitate a 746.5-foot-long suspension pedestrian bridge over the American River in Sacramento, CA.
The Guy A. West Bridge features a 600-foot-long main steel span and two steel frame towers, giving it a familiar look that has earned it the nickname "Little Golden Gate Bridge."
The City of Sacramento is looking for contractors to clean and coat structural steel surfaces and to complete some structural repairs. Bids are due April 2.

The City of Sacramento is seeking contractors to clean, paint and rehabilitate the Guy West Bridge, often referred to as the "Little Golden Gate Bridge."

The project is expected to cost about $2 million—over three times the $636,000 it took to originally build the bridge in 1966.
Scope of Work
The project entails abrasive blast-cleaning structural steel surfaces to a Near-White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and recoating the steel with an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and an acrylic finish. Newly fabricated structural steel will require shop-priming.
The project also includes bearing pad replacement and repair work on cables and suspenders, deck and joint seals, and handrails. Steel cables will be hand and power tool-cleaned to SSPC-SP 2, SP 3 or SP 11 (bare metal) and coated with an elastomeric acrylic coating. Steel bolts will be coated with an epoxy-mastic primer and an acrylic topcoat.
The existing coatings contain lead, cadmium and chromium. Class 1A containment and scaffolding according to SSPC-Guide 6 will be required.
The contractor will be responsible for performing quality control coatings inspections, including the provision of an SSPC C-3 competent person to oversee waste handling. SSPC-QP 1, QP 2 and QP 3 certifications are also required.

About the Structure
The bridge was named for Guy Ashley West, the founding president of Sacramento State University in 1947 (then called Sacramento State College).
Used by pedestrians and bicyclists alike, the bridge connects the university and the adjacent Campus Commons neighborhood.
