Mongold & Sons of Boone, NC, has been awarded a $10,885 contract to paint and repair rest-area buildings on US 221 in McDowell County, NC, the state Department of Transportation announced.
The contractor will paint and prepare surfaces as well as furnish materials and labor for the repairs to the buildings and appurtenances at US 221 and 1170 West Tate Street.
Bids were due March 19.
Scope of Work
Surface preparation entails the cleaning and drying of all surfaces of frost, mildew, moisture and loose paint. Where existing paint is scaling or blistering to expose bare wood, the contractor will wash, scrape, and remove all loose material and prime the area.
If exposed surfaces have mildew or mold, the area will be cleaned with a mildew and mold solution as approved by the engineer.

Pressure washing may also be necessary to remove imperfections.
Minor imperfections, such as nail holes in the trim and walls, will be filled between first and second coatings. All patch materials should be matched to the finished work.
Removal of any broken or loose caulking will be the responsibility of the contractor. Re-caulking to waterproof all joints will be done using latex or silicon caulking. If deep voids are present, open-cell polyurethane joint filler will be used.
About the Structure
This rest stop facility was opened in 1953 and was last renovated in 1995. It is located just outside the Marion City limits at the Tate Street Interchange. The visitor center was built to house up to 39 cars and seven trailers. Other accommodations include food options and picnic areas.
