The City of Seattle is seeking bids for coatings work on the Fremont Bridge—a contract estimated at $3.3 million to $3.7 million.
Bids are due April 30 for the project, which involves cleaning and recoating structural steel surfaces of the bascule span of the 502-foot-long double-leaf structure and four operator towers.
The project also includes coating 484 linear feet of traffic railing, 530 linear feet of pedestrian railings, and four art columns.
Scope of Work
The existing coatings on the 97-year-bridge are expected to contain lead. Metal surfaces will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6) with a lead-stabilizing abrasive additive and spot power tool-cleaned to SP-11 before coating application. Class 1A and 3P containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 will be required.
Concrete flooring inside the operator towers will also require pressure-washing and epoxy protective coating application.
The contractor will be required to work evenings and weekends to clean and paint portions of the bridge that are inaccessible when the drawbridge is in a closed position.

About the Structure
The Fremont Bridge opened June 15, 1917, and serves pedestrians, automobiles, bikes, and boats. The current blue-and-orange paint scheme was chosen in a 1985 poll of Fremont residents.
The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and is a designated city landmark.
A $14.6 million restoration was completed in 2008. Since that time, the bridge has been kept busy, being raised some 35 times daily.
