A $2.88 million contract to clean and recoat structural steel on the 502-foot-long Fremont Bridge in Seattle has been awarded to Purcell Painting and Coatings of Tukwila, WA.
The cost of the project was originally estimated at between $3.3 million and $3.8 million.

The low bid for recoating of the bridge was about $500,000 below budget estimates.

Purcell Painting's bid bested those of three other firms:

Certified Coatings Co. ($3,283,000);
-
Long Painting Company ($3,648,400) and
-
Abhe & Svoboda Inc. ($6,773,280).
A mandatory pre-bid meeting was held April 18. Bids were due April 20.
Scope of Work
The existing coatings on the 97-year-old, double-leaf, bascule bridge are expected to contain lead. Metal surfaces will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6) with a lead-stabilizing abrasive additive and spot power tool-cleaned to SP-11 before coating application.
Class 1A and 3P containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 will be required.

Construction was underway in 1916. The bridge opened the following year.

Concrete flooring inside the four operator towers will also require pressure-washing and application of an epoxy protective coating.
The contractor will be required to work evenings and weekends to clean and paint parts that are inaccessible when the drawbridge is closed.
About the Structure
The Fremont Bridge opened June 15, 1917, and serves pedestrians, automobiles, bikes, and boats. The current blue-and-orange paint scheme was chosen in a 1985 poll of Fremont residents.
The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and is a designated city landmark.
A $14.6 million restoration was completed in 2008. Today, the bridge is raised some 35 times daily.
