USACE District, Little Rock, is seeking contractors to clean and paint three tainter gates at the Bull Shoals Dam Powerhouse. The project is estimated to cost over $10 million, and bids are due Aug. 13.

The project includes abrasive blast cleaning to a White Metal finish (SSPC-SP 5) and coating the gates with a vinyl system. All vinyl paints will be spray applied; areas inaccessible to spraying will be applied by brush. All vinyl paints except the zinc-rich vinyl paint will require thinning for spray application.

Lead based paint is present in the existing coating; therefore, abatement methods and containment will be required for all blasting and paint removal procedures.

Contractors will also refurbish side seals, provide flexible grease lines, seal and grout holes on trunnion girders, and patch spalls and holes in the face of the adjacent concrete piers. Prior to mechanical cleaning, solvent cleaning will be accomplished with mineral spirits or other low toxicity solvents.

About the Structure

Construction of the Bull Shoals Dam started in 1947. Containing 2.1 million cubic yards of concrete, the dam is 2,256-feet-long, and its tallest point reaches 256 feet above the stream bed, according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture.

Along with its 17 spillway gates, the dam also has 16 outlet conduits capable of discharging 3,375 cubic feet per second.
