Two bridge coating contracts and one rehabilitation contract are all available for bidding from the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WV DOT).
The bid deadline for all three projects is Sept. 9.
Bridge Coating Work
The first project involves cleaning and recoating 58 tons of structural steel from Abutment 1 to Abutment 2 on the 99-foot-long, 22-foot-wide William Currence Memorial Bridge. The structure crosses Mill Creek in Randolph County.

At 700 feet tall, West Virginia's Phill G. McDonald Bridge is the world's highest truss bridge.

Also included: recoating 216 tons of structural steel on the 285-foot-long Burnwell TP over I-77 in Kanawha County.
The steel on each bridge will be abrasive blast-cleaned to Near White standards (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with a three-coat organic zinc-rich system.
Both projects are slated to begin April 1, 2015, and must be completed by Oct. 30, 2015.
Rehab Project
Also advertised for bids is rehabilitation of the Phil G. McDonald Memorial Bridge—at 700 feet tall, one of North America's 10 highest bridges. The bridge, also known as the Glade Creek Bridge, spans Glade Creek in Beckley and is the world's highest truss bridge, according to highestbridges.com.
The bridge was opened on July 15, 1933, and marked the completion of the West Virginia interstate system.

Rehabilitation on the Phil G. McDonald Bridge includes lead abatement, cleaning and recoating steel surfaces. Containment will also be required.

The rehabilitation work includes cleaning and recoating steel surfaces of the existing structure. The project involves 56,312 square feet of concrete sealant application and 46,930 square feet of concrete coating application. A lump-sum item for epoxy resin protective coating is also included in the bid.
Containment will be required to capture lead-based coatings, which will be abated from all three structures.
