Kew Gardens Interchange Up for Recoat

Contractors interested in the cleaning and recoating of the Kew Gardens Interchange located in Queens County, NY, are urged to bid on a project held by the New York State Department of Transportation.

Bids are due Nov. 16, following two extensions from the original letting date of Aug. 11.

Scope of Work

Work will include cleaning and recoating of all structural steel surfaces on the Kew Gardens Interchange. The project is the second contract in a two-part project to reconstruct the Van Wyck Expressway, Grand Central Parkway, Jackie Robinson Parkway, and Union Turnpike that make up the interchange.

Contractors interested in the cleaning and recoating of the Kew Gardens Interchange located in Queens County, NY, are urged to bid on the project by Oct. 19.

The contractor will oversee stripping and recoating all structural steel surfaces. The steel will be coated with either a zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a urethane finish, or a three-coat moisture-cured urethane system. The owner-approved zinc-epoxy-urethane manufacturers include Carboline, PPG, International Paint and Sherwin-Williams.

Contractors will perform 7,335 square meters of penetrating silane sealant application for new bridge decks and bridge deck overlays. The approved manufacturers include Chemmasters, Anti-Hydro International, Euclid, Vexcon, BASF, Sika, Lymtal, Pecora, Advanced Chemical Technologies and Dayton Superior.

Work will also include shop-coating of 6,310 kilograms of structural steel and performing 389 square meters of concrete coating application. The approved manufacturers for concrete coatings are Simpson Strong-Tie Co., Inc., Chemmasters and Klass Coatings.

The contractor will also be required to remove 65 square meters of graffiti by pressure washing, abrasive blast cleaning, overcoating or scrubbing, followed by 1,265 square meters of sacrificial anti-graffiti coating application.

The existing coatings contain lead, and both Class A containment and disposal of 5 kilograms of hazardous paint waste will be necessary.
