The Michigan Department of Transportation is seeking contractors interested in cleaning and recoating the Mackinac Bridge’s north tower, located in Mackinac County, MI.
Bids are due Jan. 6.
Scope of Work
The awarded contractor will oversee cleaning and recoating of structural steel surfaces of the north tower of the existing structure over the Straits of Mackinac. The 26,372-foot-long, 54-foot-wide bridge was constructed in 1957.
The project includes a set of lump sum items for cleaning and coating structural steel with the standard MDOT zinc-epoxy-urethane system or a moisture-cured urethane system. These systems are subject to change according to project requirements.
Approved manufacturers include Carboline, International Protective Coatings, PPG and The Sherwin-Williams Company.
Work will also include application of 6,000 feet of beam repair perimeter polyurethane sealant. The approved manufacturers include BASF, Bostick US, Chem Link, Sherwin-Williams, Premier Industrial Supply, Sika and Tremco.
A two-year bridge painting warranty is mandatory, which indicates that SSPC-QP 1 and SSPC-QP 2 certifications will be required.
