The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking qualified veteran, HUB Zone and other contractors to clean and recoat Cape Cod’s Sagamore Bridge—a contract estimated at up to $10 million.
The USACE Sources Sought Announcement seeks 8(a), HUB Zone, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned and Small Business contractors for the project, which involves cleaning and coating some 5,100 tons of structural steel surfaces.

The three-span Sagamore Bridge is a continuous steel arch bridge with a suspended deck that carries U.S. Route 6 over the Cape Cod Canal in Sagamore, MA. At mid-span, the bridge is 135 feet above the water.
The Sagamore and its sibling, the Bourne Bridge, were built by the Public Works Administration for the Corps of Engineers, which operates both the bridges and the canal. Both bridges opened in 1935.
The Corps replaced the Sagamore’s bridge deck, sidewalk and lighting in 2009 and 2010.
Scope of Work
The current project includes structural steel repairs that generally involve replacement of deteriorated lacing bars and rivets. New steel components are to be connected with high-strength bolts.
The work also involves abrasive blast-cleaning all metal work to bare metal, and recoating the entire superstructure—1,408 feet long and 51 feet wide—with a moisture-cured polyurethane system. The existing coatings contain red lead primer; containment will be required.
The project is to be issued in June 2012, with construction planned for the summer of 2013. The contract is estimated at $5 million to $10 million.
The painting contractor must be SSPC QP1 and QP2 certified and must document relevant experience within the last five years.
