Eko to Repaint Honolulu Sculpture

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

The City and County of Honolulu, HI, have awarded a $12,500 contract to Eko Painting and Concrete Restoration of Honolulu to repair and repaint the city’s Sky Gate sculpture.

The structure is located on the lawn between the city’s municipal building and the Mission Memorial Auditorium.

Commissioned by the city and county in 1977, the Sky Gate was created by the artist Isamu Noguchi who is known for his Red Cube in New York City.

A Perfect Circle

Though initially criticized as a “flagrant example of overspending by government officials,” Sky Gate has recently attracted the attention of astrological enthusiasts, according to Bing Attractions.

Commissioned in 1977, Sky Gate is one of Honolulu's  most distinctive pieces of public art.

The only place in the U.S. where the sun will pass directly overhead during what is called a “Lahaina Noon,” the organic shaped sculpture casts a perfectly shaped circular shadow that fits neatly into the concrete base.

According to Honolulu Magazine, this celestial event occurs only twice a year. Hawaii is the only state to experience Lahaina Noon.

Scope of Work

The project involves painting the entire sculpture to the concrete footings, including the metal surface areas, nuts, bolts and flanges. The contractor will power-wash all surfaces; treat those contaminated with mildew; and remove all scaling, rust dirt and debris.

All surfaces treated for rust removal will be coated with an epoxy-based sealer and spot-coated with epoxy. The entire structure will then be coated with a base coat of epoxy, an intermediate coat of aliphatic urethane enamel, and a finish coat of clear aliphatic urethane.

About the Contractor

Established in 1993, Eko Painting and Concrete Restoration performs commercial and residential painting, concrete restoration, drywall repair, lead paint removal, and other services. The company also applies penetrating sealers and a variety of coatings and surface treatments.
