The Santa Fe (NM) Public Safety Department is seeking a contractor to install spray-applied kitchen flooring at the Santa Fe County Correctional Facility.
The bid deadline is Dec. 5. A mandatory pre-bid meeting was held Nov. 26.

Area correctional facilities are competing to house inmates. The 682-bed jail houses about half of the 280 inmates it held when the current facility was built in 1997.

The contractor will apply a high-tensile, high-elongation, fast-set, spray-applied polyurea sealer to 5,200 square feet of kitchen floor surfaces. The coating should be applied with a minimum thickness of 120 mils and turn up the wall for an approximate three-inch cove base.
Too Many Beds
The detention center was built in 1997, across the street from the State Penitentiary, amid controversy over the large number of beds planned for the facility.

The facility averaged only about 280 inmates at the time, but the county expected to capitalize on additional inmates by increasing capacity, according to the Santa Fe Reporter. Despite protests, officials went forward with the planned design.
Now, the New Mexico Corrections Department estimates the average daily population of the 682-bed facility at 144 inmates. More than half of the taxes raised for the Corrections Department each year are spent to repay the facility’s high-interest, 30-year bond that cannot be refinanced.
The jail population is fed from inmates from around the state, as well as federal prisoners being held for the U.S. Marshals Service, but the detention center competes directly with other facilities that have also taken steps to capitalize on additional inmates, according to the Santa Fe Reporter.
