$17.6M ‘Big Mac’ Painting Contract Let

Atsalis Bros. Painting Co. has won a contract valued at $17,673,750 from the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Mackinac Bridge Authority to clean and recoat structural steel surfaces on the Mackinac Bridge.

Atsalis Bros. Painting is a SSPC-QP 1- and QP 2-certified company located in Clinton Township, MI.

Mackinac Bridge Authority
The Mackinac Bridge is often called "Big Mac" or "Mighty Mac." It's the longest suspension bridge in the Western hemisphere and the third longest in the world.
 

'Big Mac' Bridge

Constructed in 1957, this suspension bridge connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas over the Straits of Mackinac.

At 26,372 feet long, it is the third-longest suspension bridge in the world, as well as the longest in the Western Hemisphere. Because of its size, the bridge is often nicknamed “Big Mac” or “Mighty Mac.”

Atsalis Bros. won a $17,673,750 contract to clean and recoat parts of the bridge.

About the Project

The project involves abrasive blast cleaning approximately 110,500 square yards of structural steel surfaces, from pier 9 northerly to pier 18, to a Near-White finish (SSPC-SP 10).

After cleaning, the steel will be coated with a MI DOT-standard zinc-epoxy-urethane system.

In addition, the owners are currently soliciting bids for construction inspection services for this project, including NACE-certified coatings inspection.
