The engineering marvel that is the steel bridge—short or long, vehicular or pedestrian, venerable or brand new—showed an array of winning faces in the 2014 Prize Bridge Awards Competition, announced Monday (April 14).
The biennial awards, presented by the National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA), recognize innovative design and engineering achievements on structural steel bridge projects nationwide.

The Shenandoah River Bridge Delta Frame, in Jefferson County, WV, took top honors in the Major Span Category. The submitting firm was HDR Engineering Inc.

The winning bridges and their project team members were recognized March 26 during the combined 2014 World Steel Bridge Symposium (WSBS) and NASCC: The Steel Conference in Toronto.
The Bridge Alliance is a division of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).
'Economical and Iconic'
The awards reflect a variety of categories covering an array of project types: Major Span (400 or more feet), Long Span (250 to 400 feet), Medium Span (140 to 250 feet), Short Span (140 feet or less), Movable Span, Reconstructed (for major reconstruction, rehabilitation or widening) and Special Purpose (pedestrian, pipeline and other bridges that do not fit the other categories).
Projects that best exemplified Accelerated Bridge Construction and Sustainability were also recognized.
The awards program began in 1928 with recognition of Pittsburgh's landmark Sixth Street Bridge (now, the Roberto Clemente Bridge). More than 300 bridges have received first-place honors in the decades since then.

Florida's Dixie Highway Flyover won in the Medium Span Category. The submitting firms were Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. and V&M Erectors Inc.

"This year's award winners follow the example of the Clemente Bridge as they utilize state-of-the-art design strategies and materials to produce economical and iconic structures which will stand for the next 100 years," said NSBA managing director Bill McEleney.

The following projects received Sustainability Commendations:

Dodge Creek Bridge (Elkton-Sutherlin Highway - OR138, OR);

Huey P. Long Bridge (New Orleans, LA); and

Keene Road Bridge (Richland, WA).
Judging and Criteria
All structures were opened to traffic between May 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2013.
Winning projects were selected based on innovation, aesthetics, and design and engineering solutions by a jury of five engineering and construction professionals from the public and private sectors.

The River Road over Ironstone Brook in Uxbridge, MA, received a Merit Award in the Short Span Category and was commended for Accelerated Bridge Construction.
|
"These projects were selected by a jury of the designer's peers and are representative of the ability of structural steel to provide the best solution for the full range of bridge needs deserved," said McEleney.
