WVDOT Announces 3 Bridge Contracts

Three bridge contracts, two for coating and one for rehabilitation, totaling $5.8 million have been awarded by the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

The largest contract, worth $5,262,100, was awarded to Triton Construction Inc. of Nitro, WV, for the rehabilitation of the Phil G. McDonald Memorial Bridge.

A $394,440 contract to clean and paint the Burnwell TP Overpass Bridge went to International Rigging Group LLC of Tarpon Springs, FL.

Titan Industrial Services Inc. of Baltimore, MD, received an award for $143,690 to clean and paint the William Currence Memorial Bridge.

WVDOT has awarded three bridge contracts, two for cleaning and coating and one for rehabilitation work. The rehabilitation work will be done on the 700-foot-tall Phil G. McDonald Memorial Bridge.

All three projects bid Sept. 9.

Scope of Work

The 700-foot-tall Phil G. McDonald Memorial Bridge, one of North America’s 10 highest bridges according to highestbridges.com, will require cleaning and recoating of the existing steel surfaces. The project involves applying 56,312 square feet of concrete sealant and 46,930 square feet of concrete coatings.

Also known as the Glade Creek Bridge, the structure opened July 15, 1933 and marked the completion of the West Virginia interstate system.

Recoating the 285-foot-long Burnwell TP Bridge over I-77 in Kanawha County will include abrasive blast-cleaning to Near White standards (SSPC-SP 10) and applying a three-coat organic zinc-rich system.

Work on the William Currence Memorial Bridge, which crosses Mill Creek in Randolph County, involves cleaning and recoating 58 tons of structural steel from abutment 1 to abutment 2 on the 99-foot-long, 22-foot-wide bridge.

All three structures will require containment for abatement of lead-based coatings.
