MD Bay Bridge Painting Up for Bid

The Maryland Transportation Authority is seeking bids for painting the William Preston Lane Memorial Bridge over the Chesapeake Bay.

The project includes repairing, cleaning and recoating the 22,789-foot-long dual span bridge, also known as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Bids are due Feb. 12.

Scope of Work

The project will involve coating structural steel at the through-truss spans and east girder spans, as well as cleaning and painting the lane use signal gantries.

The project includes repairing, cleaning and recoating the 22,789-foot-long dual span bridge, also known as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Galvanized gantries will require abrasive blast-cleaning with a non-metallic grit. Low-pressure water cleaning of galvanized gantries will require Class 3W containment per SSPC Guide 6; power-tool cleaning of galvanized gantries and steel rails will require Class 3P containment.

The steel will be coated using an organic zinc primer, an epoxy intermediate coat, and a urethane topcoat; System F and G, which is a moisture-cured urethane system; or System H, which includes a penetrating sealer, an epoxy-mastic primer, and aliphatic urethane finish.

Four coating systems will be used on the steel throughout the project:

  • An organic zinc primer, epoxy intermediate coat and urethane topcoat system;
  • Two moisture-cured urethane systems; and
  • A penetrating sealer, epoxy-mastic primer and aliphatic urethane finish system.

The existing coatings contain lead-based paint; containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 will be necessary. Contractors bidding on this project must possess SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications.

About the Bridge

The bridge, which opened in 1952, connects Anne Arundel and Queen Anne’s Counties in Maryland.

Made up of cantilever trusses, simple trusses, plate girders and beams, the bridge features 123 steel spans, including the structure’s centerpiece, a 1,600-foot suspension span. It is supported by 354-foot-high suspension towers and 14-inch-thick cables, which hold the structure 198 feet above water.
