Luna Innovations’ Materials Systems Group is seeking a Coatings Formulator in our Charlottesville, Virginia location to support a number of programs involving the development of high performance coatings. The position will be responsible for designing and performing hands-on experiments to develop coatings to meet specific application and performance goals in the areas of marine and aerospace corrosion mitigation, environmental (thermal, radiation, EMI) protection, and non-traditional application.

Responsibilities of the position include the following:

• Serve as the technical expert for coating formulation within the group
• Formulation and preparation of coatings, application onto appropriate substrates, and relevant characterization
• Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects independently and/or coordinate activities with team members
• Understand relationship between chemical structure of coating resins and final coating properties
• Contribute to problem solving efforts related to new and existing coating systems
• Deliver high quality results on time
• Evaluate new or alternate raw materials, including novel resin chemistry, additives, fillers, etc.
• Stay up to date with customer needs, industry trends, and state of the art technology
• Communicate externally to build strong supplier and customer relationships
