The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting job opportunity available as a Piping Inspection Technologist at the Pittsburg, CA site. This role ensures inspections and repairs to piping, pressure vessels, and storage tanks comply with applicable standards and requirements such that the Pittsburg site production equipment operates safely and reliably.

Key Job Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical integrity visual inspections and nondestructive testing (UT, MT, PT) on process containment equipment in accordance with Dow standards and best industry practices. Generate written reports and initiate communications that ensure appropriate follow up actions take place. Document results in appropriate databases.

• Determine inspection scopes and plans based upon the following: equipment history, corrosion mechanisms, repair history, compliance requirements (API 510, 570, 653), equipment failure mechanisms, process conditions, and relative effectiveness of nondestructive testing methods.

• Provide direction and coaching to ensure that contractor inspections, reports, and follow up actions comply with Dow expectations and standards, jurisdictional requirements, and API/ASME codes (recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices) pertaining to inspection, repairs, alterations and re-rating of piping and other process containing equipment (PCE).

• Evaluate nondestructive testing data and inspection results to determine whether PCE meets mechanical integrity requirements and is fit to operate or if it has a deficiency which requires repair or re-rating. Specify preventative maintenance needed to prevent minor problems from developing into significant mechanical integrity issues.Specify repair procedures that comply with relevant Dow, ASME, and API standards while considering desired plant reliability and cost.

• Interact with business leadership, engineers and technicians to discuss inspection findings and determine priorities for corrective actions, repairs, and replacements.

• Consult with site materials engineer, equipment owners and other team members to ensure effective inspection intervals and follow-up actions on corroded equipment in support of fitness for service evaluations, failure analyses, and plant reliability.

• Provide afterhours inspection and repair support during shutdowns and when unexpected plant failures occur.

• Share in on-call responsibility for inspections, repairs, and fitness for service decisions that occur outside normal business hours.

Additional Support Duties

• Provide back-up support for Dow pressure vessel and storage tank inspector, non-metals inspector and materials engineer.

• Participate in internal and external audits of Dow’s site mechanical integrity program.

• Coordinate and oversee specialized nondestructive testing (e.g. eddy current) of specific equipment by third party contractors. Communicate results with turnaround coordinators, maintenance, and plant personnel to ensure timely and appropriate follow up actions.

• Perform inspections at West Coast fabrication shops to ensure new equipment and significant repairs comply with Dow standards.

• With assistance from office professional, ensure that electronic and paper files for process containment equipment are up to date with relevant design, registration, inspection, and repair information.
