This project involves rehabilitating the George C. Platt Bridge, an 8,780 ft-long x 47.9 ft-wide cantilevered through truss bridge with a 680 ft-long main span over the Schuylkill River. The project includes cleaning and recoating the structural steel surfaces. The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (near white) and recoated with a 3-coat organic zinc-epoxy-urethane system selected from NEPCOAT List B; approved manufacturers are Ameron (PPG), Carboline, PPG, and Sherwin-Williams. The existing coatings contain lead; containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 and waste disposal according to Guide 7 are required. The project also includes a total of 4,024 sq yds of penetrating sealant protective coating application for reinforced concrete superstructure surfaces. The project includes 4,800 sq yds of epoxy-based surface treatment application for bridge decks. The bridge was constructed in 1949 and was previously rehabilitated in 1984.
