5-Year DFW Airport Project Out to Bid

Thursday, August 15, 2013

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Board is inviting bids for a five-year, million-dollar painting contract.

The painting work at the Texas airport, which will be performed on an as-needed basis, will include coating a variety of interior and exterior surfaces. The cost of the work should not exceed $250,000 per year.

A variety of exterior and interior substrates at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport are to be painted with acrylic latex, direct-to-metal enamel, and alkyd systems, according to project details.

Bids are due Sept. 3.

Painting Project

The contractor will prepare and paint interior and exterior surfaces, including concrete floors; interior walls and ceilings; exterior walls; metal I-beams; acoustical ceiling tile; concrete block walls; masonry walls; metal building trim; and wood and metal doors with acrylic latex, direct-to-metal enamel, and alkyd systems.

Structural steel surfaces will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) before coating application, according to the project documents. Other surface preparation methods may include cleaning surfaces with a solution to remove dirt and grease, or high-pressure washing to remove loose paint and surface contaminants.

Because the building was constructed before 1978, the contractor should assume that existing coatings contain lead until testing has been completed and a report supplied.

About the Airport

Spanning 17,207 acres, the five-terminal Dallas-Fort Worth International airport is the largest airport in the state of Texas and the second largest in the United States.

It has its own postal zip code, city designation, and public services that include a police force, fire department, and emergency medical team.

The original four terminals were designed with expansion in mind by architecture firms Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum and Brodsky, Hopf & Adler. Although there are currently only 161 gates, the space could theoretically accommodate up to 13 terminals for a total of 260 gates.

The airport is currently undergoing a $1.9 billion “Terminal Renewal and Improvement Project,” which is expected to be completed by 2017, according to airport officials.
