The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District is seeking contractors to provide routine drydocking and repair of the M.S. Sonoma Ferry in San Francisco, CA.

Bids are due Dec. 17.

Scope of Work

The project includes pressure washing and the recoating of hull surfaces on the 169-foot-long vessel with an epoxy primer and an anti-fouling topcoat.

The 169-foot-long M.S. Sonoma Ferry will need to be pressure-washed and recoated in a floating dry dock provided by the contractor.

An alternate bid item includes pressure-washing and power tool-cleaning to SSPC-SP 3, as well as coating surfaces above the waterline.

On surfaces where blasting or grinding is performed, all machinery, equipment, fixtures and openings should be sealed off to prevent damage.

The contractor will provide a floating dry dock, graving dock, marine railway, travel lift, or syncro-lift certified capable of dry docking to perform the required tasks.

The contractor will also be expected to perform the required inspections to maintain the vessel Certificate of Inspection. These inspection and service requirements include external structural members, watertight integrity, valves and through-hull fittings, and interior compartments.

About the Vessel

The San Francisco Bay has been using ferryboats to navigate between San Francisco and Oakland since 1850. A ferry route between Sausalito and San Francisco was launched in June 1970, followed by a route to Larkspur in 1977.

The M.S. Sonoma is one of three Spaulding Class vessels built by Campbell Industries between 1974 and 1977. Each vessel cost $3.2 million to build. M.S. Sonoma was launched into commission in March 1977 and has a passenger capacity of 630.

Two new Tier 2 marine generators were purchased for the M.S. Sonoma in October 2012 and installed in early June 2013, according to the Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transportation District.
