A $21,874,935 contract for the second phase of painting on the Huey P. Long Bridge has been awarded to Abhe and Svoboda of Prior Lake, MN, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced.
The 5,879-foot-long continuous steel through-truss bridge carries four lanes of U.S. 190 over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, LA.
Scope of Work
The award covers Phase II of the cleaning and painting project. Abhe and Svoboda’s bid beat out four others that ranged from $23,635,070 to $54,142,050.

Abhe and Svoboda was awarded a nearly $22 million contract to clean and repaint part of the Huey P. Long Bridge over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, LA.

This project involves cleaning and recoating 590,000 square feet of approaches on the bridge (250,000 square feet on the east and 340,000 square feet on the west).
The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near-White finish (SSPC-SP 10 ) and recoated with a three-coat organic zinc-rich coating system from List 78 on the LADOTD Qualified Products List.
Containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required to collect the existing lead-based coatings during removal. SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications are also required.
Phase I included recoating about 3,676,000 square feet of structural steel surfaces (2,935,631 square feet on the main span; 230,000 square feet on the east approach; and 510,000 square feet on the west). That contract was awarded to Liberty-Alpha JV III of Campbell, OH for $74,849,999.48.
