The West Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking contractors to clean and recoat the Lower Pleasant Street Bridge in Morgantown, WV.

The 755-foot-long haunched girder bridge carries U.S. 19 over the Monongahela River in Monongalia County.

Bids are due Feb. 11.

Scope of Work

Contractors will abrasive-blast clean 1,658 tons of structural steel to a Near-White (SSPC-SP 10) finish and recoat with a three-coat, organic, zinc-rich epoxy-polyurethane system.

WVDOT is seeking bids to clean and recoat steel and recoat concrete on the Lower Pleasant Street Bridge over the Monongahela River in Morgantown, WV.

Exterior structural steel surfaces also include girders, diaphragms, drains and bearing devices. In general, all accessible steel surfaces that are not galvanized, aluminum or weather steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned.

No spot or hand cleaning will be involved in this project; and light posts, signs and utility lines will not be cleaned and painted.

The existing coatings contain lead, so containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required.

The bridge's 47,000-square-foot concrete structure will also require the application of a protective coating.

Additional Requirements

Norfolk Southern railroad tracks are located on the northwest end of the bridge, and the contractor will be required to perform all cleaning, painting and other tasks within specified vertical and horizontal clearances of the tracks.

Additionally:

  • The contractor will have to coordinate with the U.S. Coast Guard;
  • Work may not unreasonably interfere with the free flow of navigation; and
  • Any containment suspended from the bridge's superstructure may not extend more than five feet below the low steel in the navigation span.
