Delaware Bridge Painting Out for Bid

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

Comment | More

The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) is inviting bids for cleaning and coating the suspended-span steel towers on the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The 441-foot-tall towers support the 10,800-foot-long dual structures that connect New Castle, DE, and Pennsville Township, NJ.

The bid deadline for the project has been extended to Oct. 31.

Scope of Work

The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with a three-coat moisture-cured coating system. The system consists of a bare metal primer, intermediate coat, and full finish coat.

Bids are due Oct. 22 for cleaning and coating the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

The contractor is also responsible for collecting, stabilizing, transporting and disposing of all waste and material. Existing coatings will be treated as hazardous material; previous coatings contain lead and may also contain other toxic chemicals. Containment will be necessary.

The bridge serves as a memorial for soldiers who gave their lives in World War II, the Korean conflict, Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. Each year on Veterans Day, a special ceremony is held at the Bridge War Memorial, which overlooks the twin span.

The project is expected to begin Feb. 1, 2015, and be completed by Jan. 31, 2016.

We need more of these big bridges to be released for repair and repainting, this is a good example of how we need to upgrade our infrastructure
