Contractors wishing to undertake the protective coating and steel rehabilitation of the 6,129-foot-long Mount Hope Bridge are asked to submit bids by Aug. 23.

The 6,129-foot-long suspension bridge opened in 1929 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. The structure previously received a $6.7 million contract for the cleaning and recoating of 183,000 square feet of structural steel surfaces in 2012.

The rehabilitation work consists of abrasive blast cleaning of the superstructure and substructure structural steel surfaces to a Near White finish (SSPC-SPC 10) and spot-power tool-cleaned to a Bare Metal standard (SSPC-SP 11).

Structural steel surfaces will also require application of a zinc-rich primer, epoxy or urethane intermediate and a polyurethane finish coating. The owner’s approved manufacturers are Ameron, Sherwin-Williams, International Paint and Carboline.

The existing coatings may contain lead and will require containment. Work will also include rehabilitation of steel members.

The awarded contractor will also need to possess SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications.
