The Michigan Department of Transportation has awarded a project for cleaning and recoating structural steel surfaces on the Mackinac Bridge to Seaway Painting LLC, of Livonia, Michigan.

The awarded contractor will oversee cleaning and recoating of structural steel surfaces of the north tower of the Mackinac Bridge, which stretches over the Straits of Mackinac.

The project bid Jan. 13. Seaway Painting, LLC was the lowest of eight bidders, with an awarded bid amount of $6,290,760.
Scope of Work
The awarded contractor will oversee cleaning and recoating of structural steel surfaces of the north tower of the existing 26,372-foot-long and 54-foot-wide structure over the Straits of Mackinac. The structure was constructed in 1957.
The project includes a set of lump-sum items for cleaning and coating structural steel with the standard MDOT zinc-epoxy-urethane system or a moisture-cured urethane system. These systems are subject to change according to project requirements.
Owner-approved manufacturers include Carboline, International Protective Coatings, PPG and The Sherwin-Williams Company.
A two-year bridge painting warranty is mandatory, which indicates that SSPC-QP 1 and SSPC-QP 2 certifications will be required.
