The City of Dubuque, Iowa, is soliciting bids for the stabilization and rehabilitation of an historic shot tower. The 150-foot-high limestone and brick structure was built in 1856 to manufacture lead shot ammunition. The ammunition, which was used during the Civil War, was created by pouring molten lead through a grate at the top of the tower. The droplets would form into a sphere during the descent into a pool of water at the bottom, where the lead would cool to a solid state while retaining a spherical shape.
The project includes cleaning and coating new steel stair components and railings and existing ornamental tie rod covers with an epoxy-urethane system, as well as coating concrete roof slab surfaces with an elastomeric, traffic-bearing finish.
