The New Jersey Department of Transportation recently awarded three bridge painting contracts using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding. The DOT awarded a contract of $8,027,032.10 to Allied Painting, Inc. of Franklinville, NJ to recoat sixteen bridges, a contract of $6,104,330.00 to Atsalis Brothers Painting Company of Clinton Township, MI to recoat sixteen bridges, and a contract of $5,927,000 to Anka Painting Company of Palisades Park, NJ to recoat seventeen bridges. The contracts, which required SSPC-QP 2 certification, involve recoating existing steel structures over Interstate 280 in Essex County. The steel bridges are currently coated with lead-based paint, necessitating the use of Class 1A containment (SSPC-Guide 6). The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate, and a urethane finish. The contracts include contractor provision of a NACE Level 1 certified coatings inspector as part of the required quality control plan.
