Washington County, MD, will accept sealed bids on August 12th, 2009 for the painting of an existing 175,000-gallon-capacity Hortensphere water storage tank. The project involves cleaning and recoating the interior and exterior surfaces of the 47-foot-high by 42-foot-diameter steel tank, as well as performing various repairs. Containment is required, as the existing coatings contain lead (26.9 mg/kg interior and 93,300 mg/kg exterior). The interior surfaces will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and lined with an epoxy system. The exterior steel will be spot-power-tool cleaned (SSPC-SP 3), pressure-washed at 4,500 psi (minimum), and coated by brush and roller with an epoxy spot-primer, an epoxy intermediate, and a two-coat polyurethane finish.
