The North Carolina Department of Transportation awarded a contract of $6,600,000 to V.H.P. Enterprises, Inc. of Tarpon Springs, FL, to perform preservation work on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in Wilmington. The 3,033-foot-long structure, which features a 408-foot-long Warren truss lift span, connects Brunswick County and New Hanover County.
The project includes cleaning and recoating existing steel, including 190,098 square feet of lift span surfaces, 129,796 square feet of tower surfaces, 7,339 square feet of counterweight surfaces, 7,836 square feet of control house surfaces, and 15,726 square feet of machinery housing. The exterior structural steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with an organic zinc-rich primer and acrylic topcoats; the interior of hollow chord members will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish and coated with an organic zinc-rich primer and two coats of aluminum epoxy mastic; and siding on the towers and control house will be spot power-tool cleaned (SSPC-SP 3) and coated with acrylic topcoats.
The contract, which requires SSPC-QP 2 certification, includes controlling the emission of the existing lead-bearing coatings within a Class 2A containment structure (SSPC-Guide 6).
