Abhe & Svoboda, Inc. of Prior Lake, MN, submitted the lowest of four bids for the Newport/Pell Bridge Painting Project. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority accepted bids on April 20th for the project, which includes abrasive blast-cleaning and recoating approximately 1 million square feet of structural steel surfaces on the 11,248-foot-long by 48-foot-wide suspension bridge over the Narragansett Bay. The steel will be coated with a NEPCOAT-approved paint system. The contract, which requires SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certification, includes containment of the existing lead-bearing coatings and oversight by a third-party NACE/SSPC-certified inspection firm.
Abhe & Svoboda bid the contract at $41,363,310. Ahern Painting Contractors of Woodside, NY entered the second lowest bid at $42,450,000. The owner advertised an estimated cost of $35-50M for the project, with surface preparation and coatings application representing approximately two-thirds of the work.
