The Michigan Department of Transportation will accept sealed bids on May 21, 2010, for coatings application, lead abatement, and beam repairs on a 0.80-mile-long section of North truss spans on the Mackinac Bridge, the third longest suspension bridge in the world, stretching 26,372 feet over the Straits of Mackinac. The “Mighty Mac” connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. The project, which has an advertised estimated value of $14,700,000, will require SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications and containment of the existing lead-bearing coatings.
The contract will include abrasive blast cleaning to SSPC-SP 10 (near white) and recoating 81,300 square yards of structural steel using the MI DOT standard zinc-epoxy-urethane system. The project also includes coating 36,000 square yards of structural steel with an aluminum epoxy-mastic system.
The Michigan Department of Transportation will also accept sealed bids on June 2, 2010, for NACE/SSPC-certified inspection services for coatings work associated with this project.
