Spartan Contracting of Campbell, OH, was awarded a contract of $7,090,000 by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to clean and recoat a total of 749,000 square feet of structural steel surfaces on thirteen existing bridges on or over the Lock Haven bypass.
The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy or urethane intermediate, and a polyurethane finish. The contract requires containment of the existing lead-bearing coatings within a Class 1 containment structure (SSPC-Guide 6). The project also includes applying an epoxy resin protective coating to 14,436 square yards of reinforced concrete superstructure surfaces and sealing 46,480 square yards of deck surfaces with an epoxy-based surface treatment.
