The Maryland Transportation Authority recently received five bids for coatings application and various repairs on the Westbound William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge, a 22,790-foot-long by 38-foot-wide suspension bridge over the Chesapeake Bay. The three lowest bidders are Blastech Enterprises of Baltimore, MD, at $9,669,450, Atsalis Brothers Painting Company of Clinton Township, MI, at $14,279,600 and Certified Coatings of Concord, CA, at $15,979,284.
The project includes coating exposed structural steel elements, including portions of steel piers, as well as coating steel rail posts and the interior concrete and steel bases of built up steel columns. The contract requires containment of the existing lead-bearing coatings within a Class 1 containment structure (SSPC-Guide 6.) The exposed structural steel surfaces will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with an organic zinc-polyamide epoxy-aliphatic urethane system. The interior surfaces of the built up steel columns will be abrasive blast-cleaned (SSPC-SP 10 for steel and SP 13 for concrete) and coated with a seawater ballast tank liner. The rail posts will be power-tool cleaned (SSPC-SP 3) and coated with an aluminum epoxy mastic-polyamide epoxy-aliphatic urethane system. Reported by Paint BidTracker.
