The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet awarded a contract of $2,594,204.30 to MAC Construction and Excavating, Inc. (Louisville, Ky.) to clean and recoat structural steel surfaces on the 10-span, 632-foot-long, steel girder approach of the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge. The 5,746.5-foot-long by 38-foot-wide cantilevered truss bridge connects Louisville, Ky. and Jeffersonville, Ind. over the Ohio River. Constructed in 1928, this former toll bridge has appeared on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. MAC signed a subcontract of $1,245,000 with Vimas Painting Co. Inc. of Campbell, Oh., for a portion of the surface preparation and coatings application. The structural steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near-White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with an organic zinc primer, an epoxy intermediate, and a urethane finish (KYTC Class II, Type I). The contract includes controlling the emission of the existing lead-bearing coatings within a Class 2A containment structure (SSPC-Guide 6). The contractor is responsible for performing quality control coatings inspection services, including the provision of an SSPC C-3 competent person to oversee waste handling.
