Safway Services, Inc. of Benicia, CA, was awarded a contract of $1,974,358 by the California Department of Transportation to perform platform and scaffolding work for coatings application by owner forces on the Vincent Thomas Bridge. The 6,060-foot-long suspension bridge connects San Pedro, Los Angeles and Terminal Island over the Los Angeles Harbor and carries State Route 47. Constructed in 1963, the bridge is named after California Assemblyman Vincent Thomas. In 2005, the bridge was illuminated using a combination of solar power and blue LED lights, a first for bridge lighting installation.
Michael Mickley from Safway noted, “It’s a great project that we’re enthused to be working on. It’s beautifying the structure, as well as making it more sound.” The project includes disassembling, reassembling, and maintaining an owner-furnished QuikDeck (Safway brand) platform system at various span locations. The project also includes designing, erecting, maintaining, and removing scaffoldings for the east tower.
