The County of Lehigh, PA, will open bids Aug. 18 for re-siding and repainting historic Rex’s Covered Bridge, which dates to 1858.

Rex’s Covered Bridge, which pre-dates the Civil War, uses the Burr truss arch design.

The project is being rebid, after all five original bids were rejected earlier this summer. Those bids ranged from $62,425 to $296,200.

Like many of Pennsylvania’s remaining covered bridges, Rex’s is a Burr truss arch design, incorporating great reinforced arches that tie directly into the bridge’s abutments with a series of triangular support posts.

Theodore Burr patented his truss configuration in 1806. The Burr arch combined a multiple kingpost truss with a superimposed arch to allow heavier loads on bridges and to stretch their span capabilities.

Located in North Whitehall Township, PA, the 140-foot-long, 17-foot-wide bridge carries daily traffic over Jordan Creek. It is one of five covered bridges spanning the creek and the longest in the Lehigh Valley. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Scope of Work

The project involves replacing siding on the bridge, as well as cleaning and recoating the wood surfaces with an acrylic enamel system. The existing paint contains lead; containment will be required.

A pre-bid meeting Aug. 3 is mandatory for any prospective bidder who did not attend the original meeting June 16.
