An Indiana industrial painting contractor has bested a crowded field of bidders to capture a $5.3 million contract for cleaning and painting on the Arch A. Moore Jr. Bridge, which connects West Virginia and Ohio over the Ohio River.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation awarded the $5,333,886 contract to Panther Industrial Painting LLC, of Mishawaka, IN. Sixteen contractors bid for the project, with bids ranging up to $11,237,200.

Scope of Work

The project involves cleaning and recoating 7,949 tons of structural steel on the main span and approaches of the 14-span Arch A. Moore Jr. Bridge, which is 2,623 feet long and 59 feet wide.

The project involves cleaning and recoating 7,949 tons of structural steel.

The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (near white), spot-power-tool-cleaned to SP 15 and recoated with an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane finish.

The existing coatings contain lead; Class 1A and 3P containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 are required.

The project also includes coating interior arch surfaces with an epoxy-mastic coating system and applying 864 square yards of protective coating to concrete.

Coatings Inspection

Separately, Greenhorne & O’Mara has been selected to provide coatings inspection, quality assurance and documentation services on the project, which is expected to last 13 months.

The bridge is named for a former West Virginia governor and congressman, best remembered for his improvements to the state's highway system
