An Ohio painting contractor has been awarded a $3,886,625 contract for painting and repairs on the Reedy Point Bridge over the Delaware River.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded the project to Corcon Inc., of Lowellville, OH.

The project was advertised with an estimated cost of $5 million to $10 million.

Scope of Work

The project involves performing repairs and applying coatings to the 8,432-foot cantilever truss bridge, which spans a canal and salt marshes.

The bridge, completed in 1968, features a 600-foot main span.

The base bid involves cleaning and removal of the existing lead-based paint system, application of a new coating system, repair of missing and damaged fasteners, and repair or replacement of deteriorated steel in the main truss span between piers N1 and S1.

The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (near white), tested for soluble salt with as-needed chloride remediation, and coated with an inorganic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a polyurethane finish.

The existing coatings contain lead; Class 1A containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required, as are SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications.

The contract included two sets of option items.  An option for lead abatement, painting and repairs on the North approaches was not exercised, but a smaller option for repairing 135 square feet of concrete pier surfaces and replacing 52 strip seal joints was selected.
