An Arizona-based concrete contractor has been awarded a $397,397 contract for cleaning and sealing California’s San Diego-Coronado Bridge, over San Diego Bay.

The California Department of Transportation awarded the contract to low bidder Truesdell Corp. of California Inc., a subsidiary of Tempe, AZ-based Truesdell Corp. Two other bids, ranging up to $533,333, were also submitted.

The project had been estimated at up to $610,000.

Scope of Work

The project involves cleaning and sealing deck surfaces on the 11,179-foot-long, reinforced concrete and steel bridge that links San Diego and Coronado, CA.

The 2.1-mile bridge curves 80 degrees to allow ships to pass underneath without a steep incline for vehicles.

The work includes abrasive-blast cleaning and sealing 346,560 square feet of concrete deck surfaces using 4,335 gallons of a high-molecular-weight methacrylate resin system with sand and absorbent material. Unsound concrete will be removed or repaired and patched with rapid-setting concrete.

The work site includes an Environmentally Sensitive Area.

About the Bridge

The San Diego-Coronado Bridge, known locally as the Coronado Bridge, is a prestressed concrete/steel girder bridge that is part of State Route 75.

The curved, five-lane span reaches a maximum height of 200 feet, allowing the U.S. Navy ships that operate out of the nearby Naval Station San Diego to pass underneath it.

The bridge, which carries motor vehicle traffic exclusively, opened in 1969 to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of San Diego.

About the Contractor

Established in 1975, Truesdell Corp. provides repair, restoration, strengthening, protection and maintenance services for concrete structures nationwide.

The company has completed more than 7,000 projects and employs more than 200 people.

Its more notable projects include the $2.5 million Arizona Dam Spillway Rehabilitation project, which earned the 2003 Award of Excellence presented by the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI).

wow a buck fifteen to blast and seal in an enviromental area over water. Good luck!!!

Comment from Tom Schwerdt, (11/9/2011, 8:12 AM)

Looks like it is just the bridge deck, and presumably only the top surface.

Comment from Earl Briggs, (11/9/2011, 10:43 AM)

Of course its the decking. I can see it if they can scarify with river sand, and incorarate it into the sealer. And if the State controls trafic.
