The City of Tacoma, WA, will open bids Nov. 29 for concrete coating and repair, steel coating, waterproofing, fireproofing and related work on the Foss Waterway Seaport, a historic structure that dates to 1900.

The contract has an estimated value of $850,000 to $950,000.

The restoration project includes construction, as well as steel and concrete coating and repair.

The work involves replacing an exterior wall and performing related renovation on the historic 45,000-square-foot marine structure.

The project includes:

• Shop-coating new structural steel, including framing, with urethane primers;

• Painting various building elements using MPI-approved systems;

• Field application of high-performance coatings, including aliphatic acrylic polyurethane and thermoset fluoropolymer finishes for structural steel;

• Application of an intumescent fireproofing system; and

• Cold fluid-applied polyurethane waterproofing.

About the Seaport

The Foss Waterway Seaport and the Foss Waterway Development Authority are partnering to create the Seaport as a permanent education and activity venue on the Tacoma waterfront.

The centerpiece of the renovation is a wheat transfer facility known as the Balfour Dock building, built in 1900. The warehouse and its now-defunct mate were built to accommodate square-rigged cargo ships that frequented the port during the early years of Tacoma’s history.

The wharves hosted sailing vessels and steam– and diesel–powered cargo traders well into the 20th century. The Balfour Dock Building was last commercially active in the 1970s.
