The Hartford (CT) Metropolitan District will open bids Dec. 15 for coatings and related work on eight existing steel water storage tanks at six district sites, and for a third-party coatings inspection firm for the project.

The Hartford Metropolitan District is spending more than $1 billion on a Clean Water Project that addresses federal and state consent decrees.

Coating Work

The project includes recoating the interior surfaces and various repaired exterior surfaces on two standpipes:

• A 310,000-gallon welded-steel standpipe, 27 feet in diameter and 70 feet high; and

• A 450,000-gallon riveted-steel standpipe, 30 feet in diameter and 85 feet high.

The existing exterior alkyd systems on both tanks contain lead; containment will be required, and dehumidification will be required for the interior work.

The interior surfaces will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (near white) and lined with a zinc-epoxy system. The exterior surfaces will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 6 (commercial) and coated with an epoxy-polyurethane system.

The project also includes power-washing the exterior surfaces of the other six tanks at 3,000 psi and treating them with a biological growth barrier chemical. Those tanks are:

• 750,000-gallon glass-lined (70 feet in diameter and 26 feet high);

• 500,000-gallon glass-lined (56 feet in diameter and 28.5 feet high);

• Two 209,000-gallon glass-lined (31 feet in diameter and 38 feet high); and

• Two 500,000-gallon welded-steel (45.7 feet in diameter and 42 feet high).

A mandatory pre-bid conference was held Thursday (Nov. 17).

 Inspection Services

The Metropolitan District will also open bids Dec. 15 for coatings inspection services on the tank repair and coating project. The contract includes testing to confirm lead content. NACE-certified inspectors are required.
