The Federal Highway Administration plans to award a $22,000 sole-source contract to The National Steel Bridge Alliance to support the 2012 World Steel Bridge Symposium in Dallas, TX.

The symposium, set for April 18-19, is designed to stimulate, facilitate and promote the adoption of new and improved procedures and guidelines for the design, construction and quality control of steel bridges.

The National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA) works to promote steel as the material of choice for bridges, like Amsterdam’s red steel Borneo Sporenburg Bridges.

The National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA), a division of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), is a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing steel bridge design and construction.

NSBA’s mission is to establish steel as the material of choice for bridges. The group represents the entire steel bridge community.

Steel Conferences Joined

For the first time, the bridge symposium will run in conjunction with NASCC: The Steel Conference.

The combined event is expected to draw more than 4,000 industry professionals for seminars on the latest design and construction techniques; more than 100 technical sessions; and an extensive trade show, highlighting products ranging from structural engineering software to the latest fabrication equipment.

The event will also include the Structural Stability Research Council’s Annual Stability Conference and two new tracks: the Technology in Steel Construction Conference and Ruby University, focusing on constructability topics.

The ‘Invisible Gorilla’ and More

The keynote speaker will be Daniel Simons, a University of Illinois professor who created the famous “invisible gorilla” psychology experiment. He will share real-world stories and demonstrations to show how people miss more of what goes around them than they realize.

The 2012 T.R. Higgins Lecture will be presented by Michel Bruneau, P.E., Ph.D., professor of civil, structural, and environmental engineering at the University at Buffalo, SUNY.

More than 50 exhibitors have already signed up for the Bridge Symposium.
