Hawaii County, HI, will accept bids Feb. 23 for a structural steel makeover of the Reed’s Island Bridge, a project estimated at up to $7 million.

The quaint wooden arch bridge with a century-old foundation is 174 feet long and 16 feet wide. The rehab project calls for reinforcing the span with wide-flanged steel beams, structural steel grating deck, concrete rock anchors and lateral bracing. The specifications also call for application of a urethane protective coating system.
Tripled Load Rating
The measures will increase the bridge’s current six-ton load rating to 20 tons, to allow for emergency services to about 40 homes. Currently, fire trucks and other large vehicles must cross several private properties and be admitted through a locked gate to gain access to the neighborhood.
“The big reason [for the project] is [Reed's Island] residents have been asking for many years to raise the weight limit so fire trucks can cross the bridge,” project engineer Robert Yanabu told the Tribune-Herald.
