The Illinois Sports Facilities Authority has invited bids for various repairs, including coating and concrete work, at U.S. Cellular Field, the home of the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball Team.

Bids are due March 12. The owner held a pre-bid conference Feb. 29.
U.S. Cellular Field, known by fans as the “The Cell,” has played host to the White Sox since it opened in 1991. HOK Architects originally designed the concrete stadium. The park features include an “exploding scoreboard,” an “old-time” façade with arches, and more than 40,000 seats, according to the owner’s website.
Over the years, the facility has undergone numerous improvement and renovation projects that have “dramatically” affected the height, profile and overall feel of the ballpark.
Recently, the park sparked media attention as it was rumored that the cross-town rivals, the Chicago Cubs, would play at The Cell while the Cubs’ Wrigley Field received a major renovation.
Those rumors were quashed, however, when Tom Ricketts, chairman of the Cubs, said “There’s no plans for us to play anywhere else but Wrigley Field.” See: No Cubs move to U.S. Cellular Field.
The project
The project includes two separate bid packages, one for coatings work and the other for concrete repairs.
The coating project includes applying a moisture-cured urethane system to various metal elements at the stadium, including the foul poles.
Additionally, various dryvit and stucco surfaces are to be painted with acrylic coatings in specific branding colors, including The Sherwin-Williams Company’s “White Sox Biscuit.”
The concrete repair work includes membrane waterproofing installation, deck-coating application and exterior fireproofing.
Repairs to multiple concrete elements, including pre-cast and cast-in-place concrete, are to be performed. Project documents indicate the concrete repairs are predominately life-cycle maintenance related.
The owner specifically invites minority-owned business and women-owned business enterprises to bid for the contracts.
The engineer directing the construction projects is Halcrow Yolles, a global planning, design and management service for infrastructure development.
