Alaska officials will accept bids June 12 for installing a cathodic protection system at the Ketchikan Shipyard—a contract estimated at up to $2.5 million.

Alaska’s Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development will award the project, which includes furnishing and installing 1,320 new aluminum alloy sacrificial anodes and performing related improvements at the shipyard.
Coating Option
The contract includes three additional alternates for epoxy coating application on wharf sheet piling, wharf pipe piling, and pier and dolphin pipe piling. The structures are located in an intertidal zone and are partially submerged several times each day; environmental control equipment will be required as needed.
The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 6 (commercial), then tested for soluble salts with chloride remediation as needed. The steel will be recoated with a high-solids epoxy system.
Class 2A containment (SSPC-Guide 6) will be required, and the contractor must furnish a NACE-certified coatings inspector.
The contract has been estimated at between $1 million and $2.5 million. A pre-bid meeting is set for May 30 at the shipyard.
