The Iowa Department of Transportation is inviting a second round of bids for abrasive-blast cleaning and repainting of the Black Hawk Bridge over the upper Mississippi River.
Bids will be opened June 19 for the project after IDOT rejected the initial round.

The project involves abrasive-blast cleaning and recoating about 305,000 square feet of structural steel surfaces on the Black Hawk Bridge (also known as the Lansing Bridge), a riveted cantilever through truss bridge that connects Lansing, IA, and Crawford County, WI.
The steel will be abrasive-blast cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (near white) and recoated with a zinc-rich epoxy primer, an aluminum epoxy-mastic intermediate and an aliphatic polyurethane finish. The existing coatings are not believed to contain lead; but containment and waste transport and disposal are required.
About the Bridge
Named for Chief Black Hawk, the Lansing Bridge is the northernmost Mississippi River bridge in Iowa. At 1,631 feet long and 22.7 feet wide, the two-lane bridge was completed in 1931.
Privately built and originally operated by the Iowa-Wisconsin Bridge Co., the Lansing Bridge closed between 1945 and 1957 by damage from ice damming. Lacking funds to repair the bridge, the company went out of business. The two states then acquired the bridge and repaired it.

The bridge was closed again for a week in August 2011 to repair a crack found during an inspection of the floor beam under the deck.
The bridge has a sufficiency rating of 39.9% but carries only about 3,400 vehicles a day. A commercially sponsored webcam on the bridge is updated every 30 seconds during daylight.
The 1999 movie The Straight Story includes aerial footage of Alvin Straight (played by Richard Farnsworth) driving a riding lawn mower across the bridge.
