Park Service Seeks Bids for Historic Missile Site Painting Project

The National Park Service is inviting bids for painting a missile launch facility located at the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site in Phillip, S.D.

Bids are due July 5.

National Register of Historic Places

Designated in 1999, the Minuteman Missile Historic Site preserves and interprets the structures associated with the Minuteman II missile defense system, as both a key component of America’s strategic commitment to preserving peace and in the context of the Cold War, according to a study conducted by the National Park Service.

Historically a part of the Ellsworth Air Force Base, the site features the Minuteman II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) launch control facility and the launch facility for Delta-01 and Delta-09 missile systems, the Park Service said. The site also includes a visitor center.

For almost 30 years, these missiles and their launch facilities remained on continuous alert and served an important function in America’s defense, the Park Service says.

The project

According to project documents, the work consists of painting an underground launch control facility capsule and pedestrian floors.

Some minor corrosion, stain and/or mold removal may be needed within the capsule. Those areas must be prepared and primed before final painting to avoid reoccurrence, the Park Service said.

The pedestrian floor may require stripping to ensure proper paint adherence and durability.

The project documents indicate that the epoxy paint used must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to the cool, damp environment and must be low odor due to limited ventilation.

The project cost is estimated at between $25,000 and $100,000. The contract is reserved for small business sources/vendors.
