The City of Milwaukee is inviting bids for rehabilitation of the aging Pleasant Street Lift Bridge over the Milwaukee River.
Built in 1972 and last improved in 1990, the bascule lift bridge was given a sufficiency rating of just 47.1 out of 100 in April 2010, according to bridgehunter.com. The bridge was deemed structurally deficient, and both the superstructure and substructure were rated 4 out of 9, which is considered Poor. The deck rated only a 3 out of 9 (considered Serious).
In 2008, the bridge carried an average of 5,400 vehicles a day.
Scope of Work
The project involves cleaning and coating 18,000 square feet of structural steel surfaces on the bridge, which is162 feet long and 48 feet wide.

The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (near white) using recycled abrasive and recoated with a zinc-epoxy-urethane system. The existing coatings contain lead; negative pressure containment will be required.
The project also includes:
• Shop-coating 111,000 pounds of new structural steel with an epoxy system;
• Applying 704 square yards of a protective surface treatment; and
• Applying 7,351 square feet of concrete stain.
There is also a lump-sum item for preparation and coating of top flange surfaces.
Bids are due July 17.
