A longtime Rhode Island painting contractor has been awarded a $6.7 million contract to clean and recoat the historic Mount Hope Bridge, which connects Portsmouth and Bristol, RI, over Mount Hope Bay.

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority awarded the $6,770,650.00 contract to Aetna Bridge Company, of Pawtucket, RI.
Scope of Work
The project involves cleaning and recoating 183,000 square feet of structural steel surfaces on the superstructure of the north approach to the 6,130-foot-long suspension bridge.
The project also includes coating the interiors of four cable bents.
The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (near white) and recoated with an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate, and a polyurethane finish.
The existing coatings are presumed to contain lead. Containment will be required, as will SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications.
About the Bridge
The bridge opened in 1929, replacing a ferry that operated between Bristol and Portsmouth. (The 1855 Bristol Ferry Light still remains at the base of the bridge.)

The structure was the longest suspension bridge in New England for 40 years, until the Claiborne Pell Bridge opened a few miles to the south in Newport, RI.
The Mount Hope Bridge has been listed since 1976 on the National Register of Historic Places and underwent more than $15 million in renovations between 1998 and 2004.
