The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is inviting bids for refurbishing and painting of the tainter gates on the Norfork Dam in Little Rock, AR—a contract estimated at $5 million to $10 million.
Bids will be opened Sept. 4.
Scope of Work
The project involves cleaning, refurbishing and recoating three existing tainter gates at Norfork Dam, a gravity dam over the White River in Baxter County, AR. The structure dams the North Fork River and creates Norfork Lake, which covers 22,000 acres and boasts more than 550 miles (890 km) of shoreline. The top of the dam supports a two-lane roadway that is part of AR 177.

Other incidental work includes removing the gate side seals; blast cleaning the entire tainter gate structure (including paint removal and disposal); painting the gates and installing a new cathodic protection system on the gate skin plates; and reinstalling, adjusting and repairing side-seal assemblies.
The contract also has an option for additional items.
The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 5 (white metal) and coated with a vinyl system.
The existing coatings contain lead; containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 will be required, as will SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications.
About the Dam
Built in the early 1940s for $28.6 million, Norfork was one of the six largest concrete dams in the country at the time of its construction. A quarry and crushing plant was required to create nearly 800,000 tons of larger aggregate.
A gravity dam that resists the thrust of water entirely by its own weight, the Norfork Dam was constructed in sections, called monoliths, ranging from 40 to 54 feet in length and up to five feet high.
